Training in martial arts for me, Filip Swennen, has always been about Self defense. Namely, getting you, your family and friends safely home. This starts with tackling your own ‘ego’, the source of most conflict, and learning how to diffuse a bad situation. This can only be done if you have self-confidence that whatever happens, you can deal with it. This self-confidence is trained by learning no-nonsense techniques for Fighting. If all else fails, the skills you have developed are the only thing that will give you, your family and friends an edge to return home safely. This view on Self defense and Fighting is the centre of the SF DOJO philosophy.
“I have been repeating over and over again that he who cannot protect himself or his nearest and dearest or their honour by non-violently facing death may and ought to do so by violently dealing with the oppressor. He who can do neither of the two is a burden. He has no business to be the head of a family. He must either hide himself, or must rest content to live for ever in helplessness and be prepared to crawl like a worm at the bidding of a bully.”
